Retreat is an annual residential workshop based for the past four years in rural Britain. This is not a holiday, it is an opportunity to enjoy communal living and intensely debate artistic practices. Michael Whitby, the organizer of the event, invites a range of creative people including artists, gallerists, choreographers, musicians and theatre practitioners who each give a presentation on their own practice, or something else, during the course of the seven-day trip. This year the Howgill Fells in Cumbria provides the backdrop for the week of discussion.
As part of Attempts to Get Inside the World – an exhibition curated by Natasha Rosling, Retreat: In The City brought the spirit of Retreat to Lewisham Art House in London. For this two-day non-residential version of the annual Retreat, which was open to the public, Michael Whitby invited six people who had attended Retreat over the past four years to give presentations, which were accompanied by food, film screenings and other activities. Retreat: In The City brought together Retreat contributors in a celebration of the annual event: offering a chance to reflect on the ideas and practices presented, socialize together, and open up the format to new participants.
Retreat: In The City took place on 27th – 28th August 2011 at Lewisham Art House in London as part of Attempts to Get Inside the World – an exhibition curated by Natasha Rosling, for more information click here
